Master Kiln Builders was formed by Minnesota potter Donovan Palmquist. Since 1996, he and his crew have built over 140 kilns for schools, individual artists and institutions throughout the US. Projects have ranged from a one-cubic-foot salt kiln for a private studio to eleven kilns at a major university.

Donovan is well-versed in the essentials of kiln design and construction – refractory, metal framework, plumbing, ventilation and electrical. His depth of experience helps him to solve problems and anticipate potential hidden costs, such as roof flashing and permit fees. And most importantly – as a practicing potter for over 30 years – he understands potters and the firing process.

Master Kiln Builders can accommodate specific needs in ways that many commercial kiln manufacturers cannot. We cater to clients with unique challenges, such as:

• difficult spaces (e.g. basement space with no elevator)
• unique firing situations (e.g. sitting area for extra large or small pots)
• restrictive local zoning (e.g. earthquake-proof reinforcements)
• institutional regulations (e.g. need to work with established, insured company)

We also conduct kiln-building workshops at schools and institutions.
